Na het overlijden van Jakob, bleef Anje met vijf kinderen alleen achter. Van enige financiële ondersteuning was in die dagen nog geen sprake. Dit had tot gevolg dat het gezin in armoede leefde.



Op 18 september 1944 hadden de Duitsers de zeesluizen te Delfzijl open gezet, met de bedoeling het gebied tussen het Damsterdiep en het Eemskanaal onder water te zetten. De Duitsers wilden op deze manier de geallieerde opmars stuiten. Ook Overschild, waar Anje van den Berg toen woonde, stroomde onder water. Ze werd liefdevol opgenomen bij haar zoon Klaas en diens gezin in Wirdum. Tijdens de strenge winter van 1945 overleed Anje daar op 69-jarige leeftijd (meegedeeld door dhr. B. Kort aan hwa, juni 2009).
