Notes about Margaretha Singeling

Margaretha Singeling werd geboren in Alkmaar, maar groeide op in Den Helder en Hellevoetsluis samen met acht zussen en vier broers. Ze trouwde in 1903 met Simon van der Meulen (1878-1954). In Den Helder werden haar eerste drie kinderen geboren, Stientje (1903-1948), Siem (1905-1972), Gretha (1906-1960). In 1908 vertrok zij met haar man en kinderen naar ’s-Gravenhage. Daar werden nog twee kinderen geboren, Fie (1909-1946) en Juust (1913-1998). In mei 1914 vertrok haar echtgenoot naar Toronto in Canada om daar een nieuw bestaan op te bouwen. Zij zou later met haar kinderen volgen. In 1915 vertrok ze vanuit ’s-Gravenhage met haar kinderen naar Haarlem. Haar echtgenoot kwam het jaar daarna weer terug uit Canada, zonder veel succes. De relatie met haar man verslechterde daarna, al werd er nog wel een dochter geboren, Annie (1919-2002). In de Esschilderstraat hadden zij en haar echtgenoot een bakkerswinkel waarboven zij woonden.
