Philip was commandant van de ondernemingswacht (12 man) van de koffie-onderneming "Redjowinagoen" dessa Kalisat op ongeveer 4 kilometer afstand van Ngareanak die toen nog zeer onveilig was door zwervende bendes. Het doel van deze bendes was voornamelijk gericht de koffie-oogsten te plunderen maar vooral de gelden voor de lonen van het ondernemingspersoneel te beroven. Iedere vrijdag van de week werd het geld van het hoofdkantoor in Semarang (Semarangse administratie maatschappij) door Philip opgehaald om zo de lonen op zaterdag uit te betalen. Die fatale week echter, heeft hij het geld reeds een dag eerder opgehaald. Toen hij de volgende dag (dus vrijdag) wederom voor andere zaken in Semarang moest zijn werd hij op de terugweg naar de onderneming bij Kalimas door de bende opgewacht en het geld opgeëist die zoals gebruikelijk op vrijdag wordt opgehaald. Toen hij echter niet aan hun eis kon voldoen werd hij op een afschuwelijke en beestachtige wijze vermoord. Later is gebleken dat zijn eigen chauffeur van de ondernemingswacht bij die laffe moord in het complot zat.
