   LifeSketch: General history: In the Medieval period there was conflict between the "Vetkopers" and the "Schieringers" in Friesland. At that time Friesland was a separate entity -- not wrapped into the Netherlands. The Vetkopers were so named because "vet" means fat. They were the "fat buyers" meaning that they dealt in cattle and had plenty of wealth, hence seeing as living off the fat of the land. The Schieringers were so named because "skier" means grey. The grey was associated with the monks of the area. Later Schieringer came to mean "speakers" because they believed in talking out differences before resorting to bloody conflict. The Vetkopers were more likely to be untitled nobles who assumed power after the demise of the Hollandic counts who came before them. They were powerful via assets and via having judiciary roles giving them political power. Between 1350 and 1498 armed conflict was a frequent event -- kind of like a Hundred years war broken into sub-plots and shorter wars.arinxma and hence the daughter of Schieringers. Their marriage was arranged in an attempt to bring the factions together. It didn't work. Gale was killed in 1492 -- the same year that Columbus was discovering the Americas. He got caught by Schieringers and was beaten to death by the soldiers of Seerp Beyma.
