De Jellema’s, arbeiders, komen oorspronkelijk van Murmerwoude maar vader Thijs (1849-1938) verhuist als jongen naar Rinsumageest waar hij in dienst is bij een boer. In 1874 verbindt hij zich aan Trijntje Wybes Dijkstra (1851-1915) met wie hij een gezin sticht dat uiteindelijk zeven kinderen telt. Pieter is de oudste zoon en na hem volgen nog vier jongere broers. Alle jongens treden in het beroepsspoor van hun vader. Bijna niemand blijft in het geboortedorp. Wybe vestigt zich in Achlum, Wieger in Birdaard en Pieter bouwt aan een bestaan in Wouterswoude.
