    Lid verzet onder de schuilnaam Piet Brinkman. Tijdens de oorlog wenste Hut, die in een toneelgezelschap speelde, zich niet bij de door de bezetter ingestelde Kulturkammer aan te sluiten. Als volontair op de secretarie van de gemeente Usquert raakte hij bij de verdeling van distributiebonnen betrokken. Hut kreeg het aan de stok met de NSB-burgemeester, temeer toen hij weigerde voor de Winterhulp op pad te gaan. Hij zag zich genoopt ontslag te nemen. Omdat hij zonder werk zat, diende hij zich direct in Groningen voor tewerkstelling in Duitsland te melden. Daar voelde hij in het geheel niet voor. Er werd voor een onderduikersplek in Surhuizum gezorgd, maar het stilzitten beviel hem slecht. Binnen twee weken kwam hij terug en begon hij met het opbouwen van een verzetsgroep, de Groep Bedum, die ook wel bekend is als de Groep Oom Henk. Om aan bonkaarten te komen pleegde de groep meerdere overvallen, waaronder de overval op het distributiekantoor in Langweer op 4 juni 1943. Volgens het Oorlogs- en Verzetscentrum Groningen werd Hut op 5 augustus 1943 de eerste KP'er die werd doodgeschoten. Op het adres Fruitstraat 41 in Groningen, waar hij samen met T.P. Hut bij de familie Van der Heuvel was ondergedoken, vond rond het middaguur een bespreking plaats met verzetsman S. Hiemstra uit Surhuizum. 'Enige tijd later', aldus een rechtbankverslag van het strafproces tegen SD-handlanger Evert Cornelis Drost, 'verscheen nog de illegale werker Ter Horst en iemand die als Kramer, eveneens een illegaal, werd geïntroduceerd. Dit was vreemd, want het was bekend, dat Ter Horst enkele dagen tevoren was gearresteerd. Desgevraagd verklaarde hij daarover, dat hij weer ontvlucht was. De waarheid was echter, dat hij zich bereid verklaard had met de S.D. samen te werken (3*). Genoemde Kramer was in werkelijkheid dan ook Drost, die volgens de getuigen hoog opgaf van zijn illegaal werk. Na een poosje verdween hij weer, maar keerde terug met Lehnhoff, Bellmer en andere S.D.'ers. De heer P.E. Hut werd neergeschoten - 'door Bellmer', zegt Drost, 'door Drost' verklaren de getuigen - terwijl de heren T.P. Hut en S. Hiemstra gearresteerd werden.' In Usquert is de Pieter Hutstraat naar de verzetsman vernoemd. Zijn naam staat op een oorlogsmonument aan de Raadhuisstraat in Usquert.
