The land that Ralph was given by his brother was in an area called,
"Toeni", but it is now called "Tosny." In the word "Tosny", the only
letters that have a sound are "Tony." Thereafter Ralph was known as
Ralph de Toeni or Ralph de Tony. We will hereafter use the name of
Ralph de Tony, which is the name later settled on by the family.
Anyway the sleepy little Village of Toeni was set among green meadows
and looking across the river you could see the Chateau Gaillard
towers above Les Andelys. Ralph died 10 Nov. 989 or 990. We know very
little of Ralph de Tony 1, except that he was a very powerful man,
no.1 because of his inherited lands, and no.2 because he was related
to the Dukes of Normandy.

RALPH (or RODULF) DE TOENI I, son of HUGH DE CALVACAMP, was given Tosni by his brother Hugh, and is described as a most powerful man, perhaps in consequence of that gift. He is usually confused with his son Ralph, but there is no authority for such identification, and the dates involved show that there must have been two Ralphs, belonging to successive generations. Fils d'un noble probablement français Hugues de Calvacamp, il est surtout le frère de l'archevêque de Rouen et ancien moine de Saint-Denis, Hugues[2]. Ce dernier l'aurait établi à Tosny, sur un domaine distrait du patrimoine de la cathédrale de Rouen. Il est plus incertain que le même lui aurait donné le domaine de Conches-en-Ouche.

Raoul a dès lors une assise territoriale pour commencer une carrière dans le duché de Normandie. En 991, il apparaît pour la première fois dans un acte ducal : un traité entre le duc Richard Ier et le roi anglo-saxon Ethelred II.

Vers 1013, le nouveau duc, Richard II, élève à la frontière le château de Tillières dont il confie la garde à Néel Ier de Saint-Sauveur, Raoul Ier de Tosny et son fils Roger. Quelques années plus tard (en 1017 ?), il tombe en disgrâce. Avec quatre compagnons, il part alors en pèlerinage à Rome. De là, il descend en Italie du sud pour combattre les Byzantins (pour le compte des Lombards ?). Quelques dizaines d'années plus, ce seront les membres de la famille de Hauteville qui s'illustreront dans ces contrées méridionales.

De nouveau en grâce auprès du duc Richard II, il retourne en Normandie et meurt peu après. Son fils Roger lui succède.

Das Haus Tosny (in England auch Toeny, Tonei, Toni und Tony) war eine Familie des normannischen Adels, ohne selbst aus der Normandie zu stammen. Sie spielten vom 10. bis zum 12. Jahrhundert im Herzogtum eine herausragende Rolle, ohne jemals mit einem Grafen- oder Vizegrafentitel geehrt zu werden.

Die Tosny stammen mit Sicherheit aus der Île-de-France, obwohl Ordericus Vitalis Anfang des 12. Jahrhunderts berichtet, die Familie stamme von Malahulce, einem Onkel Rollos ab[1]

Stammvater ist Hugo de Calvacamp. 942 wurde dessen Sohn Hugo, Mönch in der Abtei Saint-Denis, zum Erzbischof von Reims ernannt; vermutlich in seinem Gefolge ließ sich die Familie dann in der Normandie nieder. Kurz nach Hugos Tod war Raoul I. de Tosny bereits so etabliert, dass sein Name 991 in einen Vertrag zwischen Herzog Richard I. und dem englischen König Æthelred Eingang findet. Sein Enkel Raoul II. de Tosny gehörte zu den großen Baronen in der Umgebung Wilhelm des Eroberers. Bemerkenswert ist, dass unter den Ehen, die die Familie mit hochrangigen Adligen schließen konnte, auch die mit Balduin von Boulogne, dem ersten König von Jerusalem, ist.

Die Macht der Tosny stammt aus zwei Quellen:

* Der Aneignung von Kirchenbesitz. Nach Lucien Musset hat Erzbischof Hugo seine Familie mit Grundbesitz aus dem Eigentum der Kirche ausgestattet

* Der Übertragung von Grundbesitz durch den Herzog, vor allem durch Richard II.

Darüber hinaus gehören die Tosny zu dem ersten Normannen, die ihren Reichtum durch militärischen Einsatz im Ausland mehrten: Raoul I. in Apulien und Roger I. de Tosny in Spanien. Raoul II. de Tosny schließlich nahm an der Eroberung Englands teil, wofür auch er vom neuen englischen König Wilhelm der Eroberer belohnt wurde: die Baronien Flamstead in Hertfordshire und Wrethamthorpe in Norfolk sind die wichtigsten Geschenke. Dennoch scheinen die Tosny in England keine wesentliche Rolle gespielt zu haben. In der Normandie hingegen treten in den Turbulenzen nach dem Tod Wilhelms und während des englischen Bürgerkriegs von 1135 bis 1154 auf. Dennoch bringt das 12. Jahrhundert einen Niedergang der Familie. Im Jahr 1204 verliert Roger IV. de Tosny im Zuge der Eroberung der Normandie durch Frankreich seinen gesamten kontinentalen Besitz, und muss sich nach England zurückziehen. Dort stirbt die Familie im Jahr 1309 in männlicher Linie aus.
