Notes about Gillis Heyen

De stam Heije wortelt in Hontenisse, een uitgestrekt poldergebied (=nisse) in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen dat als een schiereiland vooruitspringt in de Honte of Westerschelde. Het grenst aan het verdronken Land van Saeftinghe.

De gemeente bestaat vandaag uit 6 kernen: Kloosterzande, Vogelwaarde, Lamswaarde, Hengstdijk, terhole en Ossenisse. Vrijwel het gehele gebied behoorde van het einde der 12e eeuw tot de 80-jarige oorlog (1568-1648) aan de cisterciënserabdij Ter Duinen bij Veurne. De monniken bouwden op het Zand een buitenhof (geen klooster): "Hof te Zande" of "Zandehof" met schuur (zoals te Lissewege), kapel en residentie. Zo is Kloosterzande ontstaan, de hoofdkern van het huidige Hontenisse.

Door drooglegging en bedijking ontstonden de verschillende polders en woonkernen. De verspreide hoeven in de ingedijkte polders werden verpacht. In 1648 werd Hontenisse, dat aan het graafschap Vlaanderen behoorde, aan de Zeven Provinciën afgestaan en als Staats-Vlaanderen bestuurd. De Generale Staten maakten het Zandehof met al zijn bezittingen over aan het Huis van Oranje-Nassau. Het Hof werd ten onrechte voor een klooster aangezien en Zandehof wordt Kloosterzande.

In 1814 werd Staats-Vlaanderen bij Zeeland gevoegd en Zeeuws-Vlaanderen genoemd. De bezittingen van de Oranjes in onder meer Hontenisse werden in 1848 kroondomein. Ze werden aan de staat overgedragen onder voorwaarde dat de opbrengsten "ten eeuwige dage" aan het Koninklijk Huis verzekerd zou blijven. Deze domeinen worden apart beheerd.

In 1832 werd het hof Van Der Duynsoord op Schapersijk verpacht aan Joannes Franciscus Heije (Lamswaarde 13-6-1784 - Hontenisse 16-4-1848). Op 13-9-1858 zag zijn kleinzoon er het levenslicht, Jacobus Heije, vader van "Moeke" (Philomena Hubertina Heije).
