The Art of Drawing on Stone" heet. Dit klassieke werk kwam uit in 1824.

Charles Hullmandel (1789-1850), British lithographer. Hullmandel was born in London to German parents. In his early life he worked as a painter, having trained in London and Paris. During a trip to Germany in 1817 he met Senefelder who introduced him to lithography. He printed his own lithographs of sketches in 1818, but was dissatisfied with the results. He set about improving the lithographic process and devised a way of reproducing the subtle tonal variations and colour washes favoured by the Romantic artists of the day. In 1824 he wrote a handbook, 'The Art of Drawing on Stone', and in 1843 established a printing firm with partner W. Walton.

Hullmandel died in his sixty-second year on 15 November 1850, when preparations were well underway for the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park where his firm had a stand and won a medal. As he was an only son with no children, his line died out and, though I have searched through innumerable listings in directories and elsewhere, I have come across no other Hullmandel in Britain. His death certificate records that he died of a brain haemorrhage (effusion cerebro) at his home, 51 Great Marlborough Street; the informant was Sara Ling, who was unable to sign her name and was probably a nurse or a servant.
