John Verhoeve came to the US from Goedereede with his parents, siblings, and an aunt and uncle, arriving in New York on July 29, 1872. There is no indication that any time was spent in New York; it seems more likely that the family went directly to New Jersey, where there were already plentiful ties. John married Mary Van Dien (born Maartje Verduin in Holland) in 1889. He was seen in census records as a mill hand and later as a carpenter. Although he and Mary had no children of their own, they took in his sister's young son, Peter Smith, and raised him as their adopted child. The family was close to Mary's extended family, mainly the Breens, living near them over the years. I have snapshots of them as a group.
