Notes about Pieter Verhoeve

Pieter and Tona came to the US in 1872, arriving in New York on July 29th.  With them were their three small children, Jan, Cornelis and Baaltje.  Cornelis was a small person and likely a small child, and he passed for a year-old instead of a two-year-old; daughter Baaltje, who was six months old at the time, travelled as the daughter of Pieter's brother Cornelis and wife Aagtje (Bakelaar). In reality, they had married right before the trip and had no children of their own yet.  In all likelihood the arrangement saved passage money by having young Cornelis pass for younger.  The Verhoeves settled in North Jersey, living in Passaic, Lodi, and perhaps elsewhere.  They had one more child, Abel, who died at age 4, two years after his mother.  Pieter remarried much later, first to Henderika Zwarts, who died within the year, and then to Johanna Heerschap.
