    Willem II werd in maart 1651 bijgezet indeOranje-grafkelder in de Nieuwe Kerk te Delft.

Beideintentiesmislukten en zij verloofde zich met Willem, dezoon en deerfgenaam van Frederik Hendrik, de Prins vanOranje-Nassauen stadhouder van de Verenigde Provincies, envan Amaliavan Solms. Frederik Hendrik hoopte met eenkoninklijkhuwelijk voor zijn zoon zijn eigenmonarchistischeaspiraties kracht bij te zetten; hij was ookeen van degrootste geldschieters van Karel I tijdens deEngelseBurgeroorlog. Het huwelijk vond op 2 mei 1641 plaatsin deRoyal Chapel van het Palace of Whitehall in Londen,maarwerd verscheidene jaren niet geconsummeerd vanwege dejongeleeftijd van de bruid. In 1642 maakte Maria echterdeoversteek naar Holland met haar moeder en in 1644 begonzehaar rol in het openbare leven te spelen alsschoondochtervan de stadhouder.
