    Pieter de Groot was de tweede zoon van Hugo de Grootengenoot zijn opleiding tot rechtsgeleerde in Holland,waarnahij naar zijn vader in Frankrijk ging. De Groot werdenigejaren na zijn terugkomst in Holland aangesteld alsresidentvan Karel Lodewijk van de Palts bij de StatenGeneraal.Daarna Pensionaris van Amsterdam in de periode van1660 tot1667. Van 1670 tot en met 1672 was hij alsPensionaris vanRotterdam verkozen, waar hij lid was van devroedschap. Hijwas achtereenvolgens Nederlands gezant inZweden enFrankrijk tussen 1668 en 1672. In het rampjaar1672 keerdehij uit Frankrijk terug en was betrokken bij demislukteonderhandelingen met Lodewijk XIV over deNederlandsecapitulatie. De daarop volgende opstand inRotterdam nooptehem naar Antwerpen te vluchten. Hij keerdein 1674 terug,maar raakte zijdelings betrokken bij hethoogverraadprocesvan Abraham de Wicquefort in 1675. Hijwerd zelf ook vanhoogverraad beschuldigd vanwege zijncompromitterendecorrspondentie met De Wicquefort, maardankzij deinspanningen van zijn advocaat Simon vanMiddelgeestvrijgesproken.
    Hij trok zich daarop terug op zijn landgoed BoekenrodebijHaarlem, waar hij in juni 1678 overleed.
