Notes about Wouterina Kroot

Ten slotte nog een verhaal, dat waar gebeurd is. Op 29 juni 1876 zat, kort voor de aanvang van de mis, de protestantse kommies K. in de katholieke kerk. Dat trok in de sacristie de aandacht en pastoor G. van den Heuvel besloot eens "brevierend" door de kerk te lopen om poolshoogte te nemen. Plotseling vloog de kommies op hem af en poogde de pastoor met een mes te steken. De pastoor werd echter door kerkbezoekers gered, o.a. door de 22-jarige Loonse Wouterina Kroot, die als nogal potigbekend stond en de bijnaam van "Bella" droeg, en door Cornelis van de Velden, alias "de kurassier". Er wordt nog bij verteld, dat de kommies in de achtervolging van de pastoor met zijn mes in de deur van de sacristie stak. De sporen hiervan zoudennog lang te zien zijn geweest. De pastoor werd niet gewond, maar het kerkvolk was intussen toch getuige geweest van een moordaanslag. Pastoor Van den Heuvel, die 26 augustus 1821 in Veghel werd geboren, is tien jaar na de aanslag, op 26 januari 1877 te Loon op Zand overleden. Wouterina Kroot stierf te Loon op Zand op 5 september 1909 op 65-jarige leeftijd. Van beiden hebben wij de bidprentjes gezien.
