Notes about Carolina van ORANJE NASSAU

Carolina (Leeuwarden 28 febr. 1743 ? Kirchheimbolinden 6 mei 1787), prinses van Oranje-Nassau, dochter van Willem IV en Anna van Hannover en tot de geboorte van Willem V (8 maart 1748) opvolgster in het erfstadhouderschap(zie stadhouder). Tussen 1751 en 1759 was zij een pion in de politieke intriges tegen de hertog van Brunswijk-Wolfenbüttel.
In Friesland en Groningen wilden sommige invloedrijke regenten haar zelfs het erfstadhouderschap in deze gewesten opdragen en aldus haar door Brunswijk overheerste broer uitschakelen. In Overijssel werd bij de dood van Anna van Hannover in 1759 het plan geopperd Carolina, zodra zij meerderjarig zou zijn, gouvernante te maken om aldus Brunswijks macht te beperken. Het plan is echter niet verwezenlijkt: Brunswijk bleef voogd en waarnemend kapitein-generaal. Alleen in Friesland was Carolina bijna een jaar, namelijk tot Willem V in maart 1766 meerderjarig werd, gouvernante. Carolina trouwde op 5 maart 1760 met Karel Christiaan, vorst van Nassau-Weilburg (uit de Walramse linie). Zij schonk hem meer dan twaalf kinderen. Op haar positie als opvolgster in het erfstadhouderschap werd in 1814 het grondwetsartikel gefundeerd, krachtens het welk haar afstammelingen voor troonopvolging in aanmerking kwamen. Dit artikel is in 1922 geschrapt
