At almost 70 years of age he and his wife moved to Nijmegen at the request of their son and only child. They lived a quiet life there and did not feel settled.
?Pake? Binnert also sometimes sang in the church and he played the violin quite reasonably.
?Up until the acquisition of the organ in 1878, the church had singers that led the congregation. In the end this was a group of three signers who received fl. 10 per year for their services. When in 1862 - I tell this story as it shows what the times were like - the signers received their yearly payment, the signers Anne HOENEVELD, Sjoerd BINNERTS and Gerben HAITES donated it as a special gift to the poor. The church council decided to recognize them with a silver spoon with a suitable inscription.? (source: Spoken by Ds. F.H. PASMA, teacher with the Doopsgezinde church Grouw, on Sunday 10 November 1929, on the rememberance of the former Vlaamsche and Waterlandsche communities and the consecration of the new church building on Sunday 13 September 1829, page 29).
This spoon was passed from Gerben-om to his younger brother Sipke-om whose widow then gave it to Taeke Binnert HAITES as thanks for the nights spent looking after Sipke when he was sick. The spoon then went to Eesge HAITES.
