Dit "le Pieux". Fils d'Hugues Capet, qui l'associa au trône dès 987 et à qui son père a pris soin de faire donner une éducation soignée. Il répudia (989) son épouse, Rosala, épousa sa cousine Berthe de Provence, qu'excommunié pour bigamie il dut renvoyer, et s'unit enfin à Constance d'Arles (1003). Il accrut considérablement le domaine royal en annexant le duché de Bourgogne (1003-1005) ainsi que les comtés de Dreux (1015) et de Melun (1016). Il s'allie au comte de Flandre en lui donnant la main de sa fille. Il fit sacrer son fils Henri Ier dès 1027.
