Zijn halfzus Maria Martha schreef in haar levensverhaal : dat Pieter in Zuid Afrika een vrouw en een kind had.
Hij kreeg van zijn vader f 350, - om de boottocht te betalen, maar moest zich verder zien te redden in Zuid-Afrika.
Hij werkte oa in de goudmijnen in Transvaal.
Hij verdiende goed, maar maakte het ook weer op met reizen door Zuid Afrika.
Hij werkte ook als machinist om slaven aan een ketting te vervoeren.
Verhaal Maria Martha schrijft "Gronje" : Mogelijk had Piet contact met Piet Cronjé 1836-1911, een Zuid Afrikaanse generaal tijdens de Boerenoorlog.
Piet is door de Engelsen het land uitgezet, en moest vrouw en kind achterlaten.
Pieter kwam 22 jan. 1902 terug uit Pretoria, Transvaal, Zuid Afrika.
Thuis hadden ze hem dood gewaand.
Hij heeft nog geprobeerd om terug te gaan om vrouw en kind op te halen, maar dat is niet gelukt.
Hier had hij veel verdriet van.

Hij vertrok 20 februari 1907 naar Duisburg, Duitsland.
Pieter staat op de passagierslijst van het schip de "Nieuw Amsterdam".
Vertrek uit Rotterdam. En komt aan op Ellis Island, Amerika 6 juni 1910.
Zijn bestemming was Schreveport, Louisiana.
Hij kocht een tuinderij waar toevallig een oliebron in zat, en verkocht deze aan de Compie Maatschappij.
