Uit immigratie-dossiers blijkt dat Matthijs op 13-04-1908 met zijn ouders naar de Rue Nieuwstad nr. 10 te Antwerpen is verhuisd. Hij keerde, twaalf jaar later, op 23-04-1920 terug naar Nederland.

Op 20-10-1923 emigreerde Mattijs (Matthys) op 19-jarige leeftijd per ss. 'Volendam' naar New York (aankomst 01-11-1923) en voegde zich bij zijn broer Pieter die hem was voorgegaan. Op enig moment keerden Matthijs en Pieter samen terug naar Nederland want:

Op 25-02-1925 emigreerde Matthijs, samen met broer Pieter, per ss. 'Nieuw Amsterdam' opnieuw naar New York. Uit de Persoonskaart van de Burgerlijke Stand Amsterdam van vader Klaas Rezelman blijkt dat zowel Matthijs als Pieter op 26-01-1926 zijn 'afgevoerd' (uitgeschreven) met bestemming 'Amerika'.
