Anekdote over Jaap, verteld door broer Piet:
Mijn oudere broer Jaap was enthousiast en succesvol lid van de Schutterij St. Bavo en schoot met de schutterijbuks (die nu nog op het gemeentehuis in Nuth bewaard wordt) de vogel naar beneden en mocht zich zelf Koning noemen.
Nou ging dat oefenen om koning te worden vlak na de oorlog niet zonder slag of stoot. Alle materiaal was schaars en vaak van mindere kwaliteit zoals ook de slaghoedjes die moesten zorgen dat de kogel afgevuurd werd. Inventiviteit was geboden en die slaghoedjes kon je natuurlijk nog beter laten werken met een pakje "knakkertjes" achter de kogel. Dat kon ook goed fout gaan zoals Jaap Meijers ondervond toen een vonk 'n grote doos klappertjes op de werkbank in een keer deed ontploffen en een steekvlam ervoor zorgde dat Jaap een deel van z'n hoofdhaar maar ook de wenkbrauwen in een keer kwijtraakte met brandwonden in het gezicht.
Piet sprong op de fiets om dr. Starmans (onder aan de stationsstraat) voor z'n broer Jaap te halen. Maar nog eerder dan de dokter was Piej Weijermans (de lokale buurtgenezer) op de plek des onheils aangekomen en die had op verzoek van moeder Meijers het gezicht meteen gezegend.
Dr. Jos Starmans had bij aankomst het nakijken en concludeerde: hier hoef ik niets meer aan te doen.... tegen zegeningen kan ik niet op. Het verhaal vertelt niet of de wenkbrauwen er ook gelijk weer aanzaten.
