Notes about Pieter Jan "Pie" Meijers

De ouders van Pie stierven toen hij 14 respectievelijk 16 jaar oud was; zijn militaire dienst vervulde hij in Den Haag, alwaar hij zijn echtgenote leerde kennen. Na hun huwelijk woonden ze allereerst enige jaren in de Rozenstraat in Vaesrade, vervolgens in de Nieuwstraat en de St. Bavostraat in Nuth. In de crisisjaren leverde zijn eigen meubelmakerswerkplaats niet genoeg geld op om zijn grote gezin te kunnen onderhouden, en dus was Pie min of meer genoodzaakt in de mijn te gaan werken. Pie was jarenlang actief is het schuttersweze: in 1922 was hij koning van schutterij St. Martinus uit Vaesrade. De jaren daarna was actief als commandant van deze schutterij. Nadat hij met zijn gezin naar Nuth verhuisde was hij ook hier jarenlang commandant en motor van de Nuthse schutterij St. Bavo. Nadat Pie gestorven was, ging het snel achteruit met deze vereniging, en ging enkele jaren daarna ter ziele.
