Johan Evert Philippus is 9 mei 1785 als soldaat in het Staatse leger aangenomen door majoor Cornelius Kamphuis in garnizoenstad Coevorden. Hij maakte deel uit van de 3e compagnie van het 1e bataljon van het regiment van de luitenant-generaal Berend Baron Lewe van Aduard. Op kousevoeten is hij dan 5 voet, 4 duim en 3 strepen lang (net boven de mininale lengte van 5 voet en 4 duim (1,65m)). Als godsdienst wordt vermeld: gereformeerd. Op 2 mei 1787 wordt hij door luitenant-kolonel Otto Baron Lewe van Aduard als soldaat aangenomen. Zijn lengte is dan 5 voet, 6 duim en 1 streep. Op 1 november 1788 wordt hij opnieuw door majoor Cornelius Kamphuis aangenomen als soldaat. Hij is dan twee strepen gegroeid. Tevens wordt vermeld dat hij gehuwd is en 1 kind heeft. Zijn dienstverband bedraagt bij zijn laatste aanstelling 8 jaar en 3 maanden. Het is de vraag of hij dat heeft uitgediend want het Staatse leger wordt in 1795 door de Franse bezetter opgeheven.
