Jacobus Hendrik van Deemter was sergeant in het Koninklijk Nederlands-Indisch Leger. Volgens de Erelijst van gevallenen 1940 - 1945 was hij telegrafist bij de Koninklijke Marine. Hij is in eerste instantie krijgsgevangen geweest in een krijgsgevangenenkamp op Java. Op 13 maart 1942 is hij op Java krijgsgevangen gemaakt. Hij is vervolgens overgebracht naar verschillende kampen in Japan en uiteindelijk terecht gekomen in het kamp Osaka 7D gelegen te Harima (30 km ten westen van Kobe). Op 8 december 1942 kwam hij daar aan. Het kamp bevond zich op de Harima-scheepswerf. De gevangen moesten werken op de scheepswerf en in een machinefabriek. Het werk was zwaar en er gebeurden diverse ongelukken. De slachtoffers vielen door uitputting en ziekten, niet door de ongevallen (www.japansekrijgsgevangenkampen.nl). Jacobus Hendrik van Deemter is overleden aan een acute longontsteking, waardoor hij op 3 februari 1943 werd getroffen. Op 8 februari 1943 is hij overleden. De urn met de as van Jacobus Hendrik van Deemter is bijgezet op het Nederlands ereveld Menteng Pulo te Jakarta in Indonesië, colombarium C, nr 53 (www.ogs.nl). Na de crematie is de urn eerst bijgezet geweest in de Jugan-temple, Tani-machi, Minami-ward, Osaka-city (JA298). Informatie deels ontleend aan de Japanse interneringskaart. De interneringskaart was bestemd voor mevr. G.N. van Deemter-Keizer te Soerabaia. Op de achterzijde van de interneringskaart wordt tevens de naam vermeld van de eerste luitenant Clarence B. Guyman, die op 20 oktober 1945 in voornoemde tempel de urn met as in ontvangst heeft genomen.
