Valentijn is gedoopt als Valentjen op woensdag 3 oktober 1725 in de A-kerk en geboren aan het Damsterdiep zuidzijde in Groningen.
Anne Margriet wordt gedoopt op zondag 20 april 1727 in Bellingewedderschans. Haar ouders worden bij de doop vermeld als Rheinier Hertog en Lijsbet Poppe. In hun huwelijksakte worden zij vermeld als Rheinier Hertog, van Bellingwolde en Elisabet Poppes Schipvaert. Bij de doop wordt op folio 259 het volgend vermeld: "Naedat Rheinier Hertog voor sig en sijne huijsvrou voor de Gehele Kerkenraed als voor Gods aengesigt verklaert had, dat hij hertelijk berou en leedwesen had van niet, ontboden sijnde voor de Eerwaerde Kerkenraed, te verscheinen en belooft voortaen sig de kerkenorder en tught volveerdig te sullen onderwerpen is sijn Dogtertie Anna Margriet gedoopt geworden den 20 April 1727".

In het Ondertrouwboek Groningen 1739-1747, folio 218v staat op zaterdag 10 juli 1745 het voorgenomen huwelijk geregistreerd van Valentijn Gros, van Groningen met Anna Margrieta Hartoghs, van Bellingwolderschans. De registratie voor Anna Margrieta wordt gedaan door Timpinga daartoe versogt (dit is wellicht de tweede man van Elisabeth Gros, nicht van Valentijn).

Uit het huwelijk van Valentijn en Anna worden vier kinderen geboren:
1.Hindrikjen Gros, geboren aan de Drie Molendrift en gedoopt op 11 juni 1747 in de A-kerk in Groningen.
2.Jan Gros, geboren aan Olde Reithok en gedoopt op 17 februari in de Martinikerk in Groningen.
3.Reiner Gros, geboren aan de Rademarkt en gedoopt op 30 april 1752 in de Martinikerk in Groningen.
4.Hendrik Gros, geboren buiten Herepoort ren gedoopt op 14 oktober 1755 in de Martinikerk in Groningen.
