Corrie Foppes-Arendz (1923) writes about her mother:

On the pictures of her childhood, our mother Geertje does not look very happy. In fact, on any of her later pictures she does not look exactly beaming with happiness. I think she was not feeling very secure in large groups. Perhaps partly this was caused by the fact that her eyes were not good and she needed to wear glasses from very early age. But it is hard to judge if you have known somebody so well and when you have known her in her best moments: doing games with us, inventing creative surprises for Sinterklaas presents, endlessly carrying books to my prolonged sick bed, etc.

Even since I am trying to write about my mother now (28 March 1997) I wonder to what extent my memories are getting mixed up with my sentiments, I hope this is not the case. It could well be that somebody you loved so much does not really look all that happy when you look at the pictures. In any case when we were kids we never noticed it or experienced it. She was for us MOTHER, in the best sense of the word.

Still a few more of here qualitities: she was absolutely not musical, in spite of all these organ playing forefathers. This is in sharp contract to her brother Emo, who could play on the piano anything he heard and played very well. His son, my cousin Lubbertus Patroclus (Bert) Pentermann seems to continue this family tradition, accompanying the ladies choir in Warffum on the piano and doing some solo singing as well.

My mother had a good eye for color, which can be seen from the way she would arrange flower bouquets and her embroidery work. I believe she got this from her mother, need to check this. The love of amateur painting that both my brother and I are now engaged in, could come from her side.

Although my mother spend time in a boarding school for girls, where I believe she spent two very happy years, she was less interested in our table manners ( it was always our father who was correcting us, much to the chagrin of my brother, anyway I should be grateful that he did as it is so useful when one can manage with such things under any circumstance).

My mother attached more importance to decorating the table nicely for events such as Christmas and she would get me involved in chores like polishing all the red star-apples to a shine or wrapping tangerines in tinfoil. Up to this day I still like the part of setting up the table best in the whole processing of serving dinner. I always start with decorating and setting the table, and when I am finished, I start thinking: "OK, now we need to figure out some food to go on this table as well!".

Our father, who had a great feeling for language, once overheard a conversation between his father in law, L.P. Pentermann, who was over 90 with his half-brother Jaap who was also in his nineties and dieing. My father would describe the conversation as follows: Grandfather enters the room where Jaap is lying on his bed. Grandfather:" Joap!" Jaap: "Bertus!" Grandfather:" Most nait oetknip'n, blief'k allain!" (Don't sneak out on me now, I'd be left all alone!)

And that was it. They did not say much, but it meant a lot! My mother had that same spare use of words. In her age, one was baptized at birth, but at the age of 18 one had to make a conscious decision to join a church congegration or another. Before that, one would follow a number of confirmation classes where the basic tenets of Christian beliefs were taught. This was usually followed automatically with one's "confirmation", where one would enter formally into a church community and agree to live according to its views.

Geertje created a big shock when she announced that she would refuse to take part in the confirmation ceremony. This was the daughter of one of the churches elders! I do not think anybody expected this shy girls to take such a rebellious initiative. But when asked why she refused to join, she answered very simply:" Kin't nait gloov'n" (Cannot believe the whole thing!) and that was that.

Honest and Brave! She did need this courage in later life. It also appears she was the only one in the family who dared contradict her rather overbearing father. This was Geertje Pentermann as a child.

Corrie Foppes-Arendz (1923) schrijft over haar moeder:

Op kinderfotos ziet onze Geertje er niet erg gelukkig uit. En eigenlijk is ze op fotos uit latere levensfasen ook niet erg stralend. Ik denk dat ze zich in met name wat grotere gezelschappen niet hele maal zeker voelde. Mogelijk kwam dat mede omdat zij blijkbaar "slechte" ogen had en al heel jong een bril moest dragen. Maar het is moeilijk oordelen als je zo intiem met iemand bent opgegroeid en haar gekend hebt in haar beste wezen: spelletjes met ons doend, originele surprises bedenkend met Sinterklaas, eindeloos boeken aansjouwend bij langdurige ziekte,etc.

Sinds ik met mijn Moeder in dit karwei in de weer ben (28/03/97) vraag ik mij af in hoeverre herinneringen en sentiment samenvallen en dat is natuurlijk helemaal niet het geval. Het kan je weliswaar begroten dat iemand van wie je hebt gehouden niet helemaal gelukkig lijkt op de (vele) foto's die zijn bewaard, als kind heb je dat niet in de gaten en we hebben het ook niet ervaren. Ze was voor ons MOEDER, in de beste zin van het woord.

Toch nog een paar eigenschappen: ze was,ondanks alle organisten in de familie absoluut niet muzikaal .Dat in tegenstelling met haar broer Emo die zonder bladmuziek alles kon spelen (piano) wat ie hoorde en een mooie aanslag had. Zijn zoon L.P.P. jr .zet overigens de familietraditie wel voort en leidt op dit ogenblik een dameskoor in `Warffum , begeleidde dat ook en geeft af en toe solo-zang daarbij ten beste.

Moeder was wel kleurgevoelig,hetgeen bleek uit het samenstellen van boeketten en haar handwerkstukken. Ik denk dat dat van haar Moeders kant kwam.Zal dat nog es proberen te achterhalen.De amateur=teken en schilders= beoefening door mijn broer en mij zou dus wel eens uit die hoek kunnen komen. Hoewel Moeder op een meisjespensionnaat was geweest,en daar, denk ik twee heel gelukkige jaren heeft beleefd, was zij minder geinteresseerd in onze tafelmanieren dan Vader (die ons daaromtrent zeer achter de vodden zat, niet helemaal tot genoegen van mijn broer)-niettemin zijn we hem er later toch wel dankbaar voor geweest: het is gemakkelijk als je je overal met dat soort zaken kunt redden.

Moeder vond het belangrijker om b.v. met Kerstmis de tafel leuk te dekken en betrok me daar dan ook bij door me b.v. de rode sterappeltjes glimmend te laten poetsen of mandarijntjes in zilverpapier te pakken. En nog vind ik bij het geven van een etentje de tafeldekkerij een van de leukste fasen van het proces. Ik begin altijd met het tafeldekken en als dat klaar is denk ik:tja , nu moet er ook wel wat te eten op ! Het meest typerend voor "onze Moe" was haar directe eerlijkheid. Nu leent de taal-en klankkeuze van het Hoge Noorden zich ook extreem goed voor korte en doelgerichte uitspraken,ook waar het sentiment betreft.

Vader,die heel gevoelig was voor taalgebruik was diep onder de indruk van de conversatie tussen Grootvader L.P.P. sr. en diens halfbroer Jaap, die( ergens in de 90) op sterven lag.Vader was kennelijk bij dat ziekenbezoek aanwezig en beschreef de scene als volgt:Opa betreedt het vertrek en nadert de bedstee. Bertus.: "Jaop...?" Joap: "Bertus ..!" Bertus: "Most nait oetknip'n, blif'k allain !" En dat was het. Zei niet, maar zegt veel!

Van Moeder is een dergelijk taalgebruik bekend. In die tijd werd je als baby gedoopt maar je sloot je bewust aan bij een kerkgenootschapzo ongeveer je 18e. Je volgde dan eerst catechesatie (godsdienstlessen) een meestal volgde dan automatisch je "Belijdenis" d.w.z. dat je met een formule bevestigde dat je tot een kerkgenootschap wenste toe te treden en je in je leven zou richten naar de opvattingen van die kerk. Grote schrik toen Geertje te kennen gaf niet aan dit ritueel te zullen deelnemen. En dat nog wel de dochter van de President-kerkvoogd!!! Ik denk ook dat niemand verwacht had dat "verlegen" Geertje een dergelijk initiatief zou nemen. Maar haar antwoord op de vraag waarom dan wel niet was uiterst simpel: "Kin't nait gloovn"(Kan het niet geloven!) en dat was dat.

Eerlijk en moedig !!! Die moed heeft ze later in haar leven wel nodig gehad (Het schijnt overigens dat ze de enige was die haar vader tegen durfde te spreken). Dat was dus dochter Geertje Pentermann.
