Notes about Sjoerd Meun

Sjoerd Meun kon op de Wilhelminaschool in Urk zo goed leren, dat meester Loosman er bij zijn ouders voor pleitte om hem verder te laten doorleren. Daarvoor had men echter niet de middelen. Er was armoede en soms spijbelde Sjoerd van school ombij een Bunschoter visserman, netten over te halen. Trots was hij dan als hij zeven stuivers aan zijn moeder kon geven voor de boodschappen. Thuis moest hij meehelpen met garnalenpellen, wat hij slapende kon.
Ondanks het spijbelen doorliep hij vlot de lagere school, om daarna als "dordemannetje" te gaan vissen op een ijsselmeerkotter. In de tussentijd volgde hij een visserijcursus.
Als ervaren visser liet hij later in Smilde een schip bouwen, dat het visserijnummer UK 135 kreeg. Hiermee beoefende hij van 1942 -1952 de IJsselmeervisserij.
Omdat hij deel had aan de voedselvoorziening bleef hij als visser uit de handen van de Duitsers. Wel dook hij bij een razzia voor alle zekerheid onder.
Als jongeman droeg Sjoerd , zoals het gehele gezin, de Urker klederdracht. Hij verruilde in 1952 het urkerpak voor een uniform bij zijn benoeming als sluiswachter.
Sjoerd bleef lang ongetrouwd totdat Ietje Baarssen, na zes jaar verblijf in het sanatorium Sonnevanck, naar huis terugkeerde. Zij trouwden en kregen twee dochters.
Sjoerd kon goed leren, zo volgde hij een cursus bij Rijkswaterstaat en slaagde hiervoor met hoge cijfers.
In 1964 volgde een benoeming bij de gemeentelijke visafslag. Velen zullen hem herinneren in het keetje op de Dormakade bij het spiering lossen. Het veilen van de vis gebeurde op de ouderwetse manier zonder mijntoestel door de prijs in rap tempo aan de kooplui af te roepen. Hij was een punctueel man, die hield van orde, regelmaat en netheid. Iemand van weinig woorden en wat vinnerlijk in hem omging toonde hij niet zo direct naar buiten.
1 januari 1984 ging hij met pensioen, maar bleef visoppasser voor de UK 176 en UK 177. Dit heeft hij vier jaar gedaan tot 1988. Dagelijks maakte hij met de fiets een tochtje naar de haven om daar op een bankje te genieten van het havengebeuren.
In 1987 verhuisde Sjoerd en Ietje naar een bejaardenwoning, maar de gezondheidstoestand van zijn vrouw bracht hem ertoe om in februari 1999 de bejaardenwoning te verruilen voor het verzorgingshuis Talma.
Het laatste halfjaar van zijn leven kwamen er gezondheidsklachten, die steeds ernstiger werden. Helder van geest bleef hij tot het laatst en ondanks de achteruitgang was hij slechts twee dagen bedlegerig. Rustig en kalm was zijn levenseinde.
