Vanuit Nederland vertrokken tussen 1942 en 1944 in totaal zijn 68 treinen met ruim 68.000 joden naar het vernietigingskamp Auschwitz in Polen. Ruim 40.000 van hen werden bij aankomst onmiddellijk gedood. Verreweg de meeste anderen overleden aan de ontberingen van het kampleven. Slechts ongeveer duizend uit Nederland gedeporteerde joden overleefden Auschwitz. Een aantal uit Nederland weggevoerde joden zijn al voor aankomst van de trein in Auschwitz uit het transport gehaald en getransporteerd naar kleinere kampen. De commandant van Auschwitz voerde namelijk ook gezag over ongeveer 40 kleinere kampen, maar het bekendst zijn de drie hoofdkampen: Auschwitz I, Auschwitz II-Birkenau en Auschwitz III–Monowitz. In de hoofdkampen moesten gevangenen dwangarbeid verrichten in bijvoorbeeld de bewapeningsindustrie en stierven velen door honger, uitputting en ziekte. In Auschwitz I en II hadden de nazi’s gaskamers gebouwd om grote aantallen mensen te vermoorden. Naar schatting zijn anderhalf miljoen mensen in Auschwitz vermoord.

Vanaf 1947 is Auschwitz een monument en museum. Het voormalig kampcomplex staat vanaf 1979 op de werelderfgoedlijst van Unesco.
