Notes about Petrus Mels

De oorlog tussen Spanje en de geuzen bleef maar duren. De franse koning Lodewijk de dertiende had ondertussen ook de oorlog verklaard aan Spanje en zijn bezittingen.
De prins van Oranje wist zich gesteund door de franse koning en viel weer volop onze gewesten binnen. Hij trachte Hulst in te nemen. De broer van de spaanse koning Philip IX, Ferdinand, kardinaal en aartsbischop van Toledo die tot voogd was benoemd over de Nederlanden kwam met een groot leger naar Stekene afgezakt om de grenzen te bewaken.
De soldaten werden in stekene ingekwartierd en plunderingen en opeisingen bleven niet uit. In 1648 kwam de vrede in zicht door de scheiding van Noord en Zuid, doch het land van Waas en Stekene lagen er verwoest en uitgeput bij. De dorpen waren leeggeplunderd en de akkers lagen braak.
