Matthys Andries de BEER, land in 1703 aan die Kaap. Hy was nie net 'n grondbesitter nie, maar ook 'n wamaker van beroep en kom van Wasa, 'n plek wat vermoedelik vandag as Vaasa bekend is. Gedurende daardie tyd het Wasa in Swede geval, maar vandag is Vaasa in Finland. Matthys word dus histories as 'n Sweed beskou. Op 24 Oktober 1705 trou hy met Hilletje SMIT, gedoop op 1 April 1691, en die dogter van Jan Smit en Adriana Tol. Hulle woon eers in Stellenbosch, maar boer later in Drakenstein.

In die eerste helfte van 1701 het Jacob van die Kus Coromandel, die slaaf van Isaac Schrijver, die 14-jarige Hilletje Smit teen sonsondergangs in Jonkershoek naby Stellenbosch voorgelê. Hy het haar probeer ompraat om omgang met hom te hê, maar sy het geweier en vir etlike ure mooigepraat om hom van sy voorneme te laat afsien. Eindelik, teen sowat tienuur die aand, het 'n burger tot haar redding gekom. Na Jacob se inhegtenisname het hy tydelik ontvlug, maar hy is weer gevang en tot die dood veroordeel. Hy is op 10 Junie gehang.
