Notes about Hendrik van Oordt

Heer van Lauwenrecht, welke heerlijkheid hij kocht in 1899.
Hij werkte aanvankelijk bij de firma Gebroeders Van Oordt. Hij deed in 1891 met goed gevolg examen voor leerling-consul en werd per 1 januari 1892 aangesteld tot kanselier bij het Consulaat-Generaal te Antwerpen. Hier was hij lid van internationale jury op de Antwerpse wereldtentoonstelling. Vervolgens bekleedde hij verschillende consulaire functies in het buitenland, o.a. te Constantinopel, Hamburg, Kaapstad, Kobe (Japan) en Zuid-Afrika. In Hamburg was hij voorzitter en medeoprichter van de daar in 1899 gestichte Kamer van Koophandel. In 1917 werd hij benoemd tot consul-generaal te Santiago de Chile met de persoonlijke titel van Buitengewoon Gezant en Gevolmachtigd Minister. Eervol ontslag (1921).
Als consul-generaal te Kobe verzorgde hij het eerste in Japan in de Nederlandse taal uitgegeven nieuwsblad 'Van Oordt's Berichten', dat tussen 1905 en 1908 op onregelmatige tijden verscheen en hoofdzakelijk handelsberichten bevatte. No. 12 dezer Berichten, gedateerd 1 October 1907, bevatte als bijlage een volledig geïllustreerde en gekleurde beschrijving van de Japanse rijstcultuur.
In 1905 schonk hij aan het Museum voor Natuurlijke Historie te Leiden zijn collectie van 234 huiden van Japanse vogels, waarvoor hij in 1931 werd begiftigd met de ere-penning in zilver 'voor zijn belangstelling, betoond voor 's Rijks openbare verzamelingen'.
Ridder in de Orde van Oranje Nassau; Officier in de Orde van de Eikenkroon (1904); medaille 1e kl. Orde van Verdienste van Chili (1924).
