Childerik III (751), sloot door bemiddeling van de Engelse zendeling Bonifatius een bondgenootschap met paus Stefanus II (752), werd 754 door paus Stefanus III tot koning gezalfd, veroverde het Esarchaat van Ravenna en schonk dit aan de paus, wat het begin was van de Kerkelijke Staat.
