Hij werd tegelijk met zijn vader Pippijn de Korte en zijn jongere broer Karloman door paus Stefanus op 28-07-754 te St.Denis tot koning en “Patricius Romanorum” gezalfd. Volgde zijn vader op in het noordelijke deel van het Frankische rijk (24-09-768). Voor dat gedeelte werd hij 09-10-768 te Noyon gezalfd tot “koning der Franken”. Na het overlijden van zijn broer Karloman 04-12-771 werd hij alleenheerser en te Corbeny gezalfd tot koning van alle Franken. Na de inname van Pavia (06-774) werd hij ook koning der Longobarden. Daarna voerde hij ook daadwerkelijk de titel “Patricius Romanorum” tot hij 25-12-800 door paus Leo III te Rome tot keizer werd gekroond. 1e huw. met Himiltrud. 2e huw. met Desiderata van Longobardië. 4e huw. 10-783 met Fastrada. 5e huw. voor 796 met Luitgard. 3e huw. 771 voor 30-04 te Aken met:
