Wessex (871-899), volgde zijn broer Aethelred op die in de strijd tegen de Noormannen was gesneuveld, versloeg de Noormannen in Edington (878) en sloot een verdrag met de Deense koning Guthrum waarbij aan de Noormannen een wel omlijnd deel van Engeland werd afgestaan. De wijze waarop hij de bestuurlijke, rechterlijke en economische wederopbouw van zijn rijk doorvoerde, alsmede zijn culturele activiteit bezorgden hem de kwalificatie “de Grote”. Evenals Karel de Grote stichtte hij een hofschool, waarheen hij grote leermeesters aantrok. Geh. 865 met:
