33959841136  Hugo Capet, geb. ca.941, ovl. 24-10-996, koning v. Frankrijk (987-996). Werd gekozen tegen de Karolingische medepretendenten in. Moest aanvankelijk het hoofd bieden aan de rebellie van de Karolinger Karel van Lotharingen. In het kader van dit conflict poogde Hugo de naar de tegenpartij overgelopen bisschop Arnulf van Reims te vervangen door zijn eigen vriend Gerbert, de latere paus Silvester II; hij liet Arnulf door het Concilie van Verzy (991) afzetten maar moest zwichten voor het veto van paus Johannes XII en de Duitse bisschoppen. Intussen wist Capet in maart 991 Karel van Lotharingen definitief gevangen te zetten. In de tweede periode van zijn regering bekampte hij de opstandige vazal Odo van Chartres die in 991 Melun innam.
