Komt na zijn huwelijk in opstand tegen zijn vader maar wordt door hertog Robert vanNormandië verslagen en moet zich verzoenen (1030, Oudenaarde). Wordt 1035 graaf v. Vlaanderen. Neemt actief deel aan de algemene opstand van Neder-Lotharingen tegen keizer Hendrik III (1044) en steekt de rijksburcht te Nijmegen in brand doch wordt 1049/50 onderworpen. Wordt door keizerin-weduwe Agnes bevestigd in het leen Zeeland bewesten Schelde (1056). Wordt regent v. Frankrijk 1060-1067, en is nog aanwezig bij de inwijding v.d. St.Baafs te Gent (09-05-1067). Geh. 1028 Parijs met:
