Na zijn huwelijk gaat Jan ten Bruggencate op de boerderij van zijn vrouw Gesijna's familie wonen. In 1721 koopt Jan's broer Lambert de ramen van het klooster in Albergen, en hij geeft die aan Jan, die ze gebruikt voor een nieuwe boerderij. Deze boerderij staat nog steeds in Zeldam, aan de Rappardsweg 5 in Zeldam.
Jan ten Bruggencate gaat op 18 dec 1732 in dienst van de VOC. Hij was een huistimmerman. Hij vaart uit vanuit Texel op het schip "Vis" onder Master Lukas Semeyns.
