Maandag 17 augustus 1942: in de landelijke ochtendbladen plaatste de Höhere SS und Polizeiführer Nord West deze bekendmaking:
"aangezien ondanks de uiterst dringende uitnoodiging van den Wehrmachtsbefehlhaber - General der Flieger Christiansen - de daders van den springstofaanslag in Rotterdam te laf zijn geweest om zich aan te melden, zijn de volgende gijzelaars aangepakt en hedenmorgen doodgeschoten:
1) Ruis, Willem, directeur-generaal, Rotterdam
2) Graaf E.O.G. van Limburg Stirum, Arnhem
3) Mr. Baelde, Robert, Rotterdam
4) Bennekers, Cristoffel, vroeger hoofdinspecteur van politie, Rotterdam
5) Baron Alexander Schimmelpennink van der Oye, Noordgouwe, Zeeland."
De 'Polizeiführer' nam niet eens de moeite om de namen van de slachtoffers correct te vermelden!
