Roermond had omstreeks 1840 -1870 een grote instroom van vooral Duitse arbeiders, die aangetrokken werden door de opkomende en bloeiende industrie van de stad. Waarschijnlijk is Carl Trautmann één van deze immigrerende arbeiders geweest. Hij komt uit Saksen, Oost-Duitsland.

Carl woonde aanvankelijk in het Duitse Krefeld, net over de grens bij Roermond. Daar werden ook zijn eerste kinderen geboren. Begin 1863 komen ze naar Roermond, waar Carl gaat werken als gasfitter. Hun adres in het bevolkingsregister van 1870 is Schuitenberg 185a. Zijn genoteerde godsdienst is Luthers, terwijl de rest van zijn gezin als rooms-katholiek werd genoteerd. In het bevolkingsregister van 1880 is Carl nog steeds 'gasarbeider', maar is hij verhuisd naar Schuitenberg 52a. De broer van Isabella, Joseph Hubert van de Venne, van beroep kleermaker, woont ook in bij het gezin. Veel van de kinderen werken al: Carl is ook gasarbeider, Franz is verver, Louis is fabrieksarbeider, Emilie is dienstmeid en Bertha is dienstbode. Tussen 1882 en 1886 vertrekken de meeste kinderen. Niet alleen uit huis, maar zelfs uit Roermond, op zoek naar een beter leven. De meesten gaan naar de fabrieken van het Waalse Luik en Tilff, maar anderen gaan naar Rotterdam, Haarlem en Rheindalen. Carl en Isabella blijven in Roermond. In 1890 wordt als beroep nog steeds gasfitter ingevuld, net als in 1900. Op het laatst van zijn leven woont hij op het adres Schuitenberg 9.
