Notes about Ighe Gaelis (Ygo) Galama

Ygo, bijgenaamd 'Het Woudzwijn', is één der beruchtste vechtersbazen uit de familie. De muren van zijn slot te Oudega, iets ten noorden van de kerk, waren naar men zegt, 15 voet dik, ruim 4 meter. Andere bronnen hebben het over 14 steen, ruim 2 meter; ook nog behoorlijk.

Hij was een rijk, machtig en oorlogskundig Vetkoper (dit is een aanduiding van de politieke gezindheid van Ygo Gaeles. In de tijd van de twisten tussen Schieringers en Vetkopers in Friesland, was het Westergo, waar Koudum toe behoorde Schierings gezind). Meest bekend is zijn voortdurende strijd met abt Agge van het St. Odulfklooster te Hemelum. De strijd was begonnen met een twist over de huuropbrengst van diverse landerijen. Jaren strijd waren het gevolg en Ygo werd op een gegeven moment zelfs in de (kerkelijke) ban gedaan! Ygo vond echter dat hij het recht aan zijn kant had, immers al meer dan twintig jaar ontving hij de huur.

Uiteindelijk sneuvelde hij op 25 januari 1492 te Workum, na een gevecht met de Schieringers, waarin hij zwaargewond was geraakt. Door zijn knecht Seerp Beijma werd hij daarop wreedaardig vermoord - hij had eerst nog wel even mogen biechten...! Overigens: abt Agge is op 16 september 1494 aan de pest overleden.

In 1498 komt Friesland onder het bewind van de Habsburgers (Maximiliaan van Oostenrijk) en wordt Albrecht van Saksen Gouverneur en Potestaat van Friesland. Hiermee komt er een einde aan de strijd tussen de Schieringers en Vetkopers.

Tegenwoordig is er nog een Ige Galemawei te Oudega.
