Douwe Hanzes Faber is bij huwelijk afkomstig uit Pingjum. Vanaf 1717 drijft hij een ijzersmederij aan de Dijkstraat in Bolsward. Op 22 juni 1722 verkrijgt hij het burgerschap en op 23 juni legt hij zijn meesterproef af. Hij is beheerder van de diaconie en wordt 13 augustus 1745 lid van de vroedschap. In 1755 neemt zijn zoon Lieuwe de smederij over. Douwe en Aukjen (zijn tweede vrouw) vestigen zich dan in de Polstraat (nu Jongemastraat) in Bolsward.
