Notes about Digna Bloom

Bloom lijkt een Britse naam te zijn, wellicht afkomstig van een buitenlandse militair in Staatse dienst. Zo komt er in 1639 al een vrouw voor, Rut Bloom, die als getuige fungeert bij een Bredase geboorteakte. Maar in de geboorteakte van haar dochter Hendrina uit 1734 wordt haar naam geschreven als BLOEM, en zijn de peter en meter van het kind Henricus en Maria Bloem. In 1724 is er al een DIJMPHNA BLOEM meter voor een onwettig kind, Adriana van der Aerden. Echter, in een andere doopakte komen we ook Hendericus weer tegen als vader van een zoon Joannes, en een Joannes Merqui als doopgetuige, maar dan is de achternaam BLOM. En dat is ook de achternaam waaronder ze in het trouwboek wordt ingeschreven, als ze trouwt met Jan Marquis. Ze woont dan op de Haagdijk. Dus waarschijnlijk is Bloom een verschrijving van een gewone Nederlandse naam.

Op 14 augustus 1769 is ze nog aanwezig als meter bij de doop van (kleindochter) Petronella Marki. Op 13 november 1775 is ze ook meter voor kleinzoon Henricus. Ze is begraven na een (kosteloze) dienst in de Kleine Kerk te Breda.

Vanwege het veelvuldig voorkomen van de naam Henricus als broer en (klein)zoon in haar leven, evenals de naam Petrus, is het zeer waarschijnlijk dat zij dezelfde ouders had als Henricus en Petrus. Daarvan is echter geen direct bewijs gevonden in de Bredase archieven. Dat kan te maken hebben met de verschillende schrijfwijzen van de naam Blom/Bloom. Het kan ook zijn dat haar vader, die als korporaal diende in het regiment onder Overste Voogd, rond 1700 elders gelegerd was, en dat Digna dus elders geboren is. Dit is echter in tegenspraak met haar huwelijksinschrijving, waarin staat dat ze te Breda geboren is.
