Notes about Cornelia Bitrock

De naam BITROCK is behoorlijk mysterieus. Hij lijkt Brits, en kan voortkomen uit een Britse militair gelegerd in Bergen op Zoom. De naam komt verder nauwelijks voor, en van Cornelia wordt na 1756, als ze getuige is op een doopakte, niets meer gehoord. Een betere verklaring is wellicht te vinden in de archieven van het Historisch Centrum van het Markiezaat. Daar vinden we erg vaak de naam Cornelia, gevolgd door allerhande schrijfwijzen van de achternaam BITTERHOEK. Enkele voorbeelden: BITTEROECK, BITTEROCK, BITTEROEX, BITTEROX, BITTERHOECX, BITTERHOECKX, BITTERHOECKS, etc. In dat geval is de kans groot dat haar vader Jacobus Bitterhoecks heette. Ze heeft in ieder geval een oudtante Cornelia Cornelissen Bitterhoeck die in 1704 te Bergen op Zoom trouwt met ene Martinus Verwilt. Voor beide is het een tweede huwelijk.

Op 18 april 1746 trouwt Cornelia te Halsteren met ene Johannes Fortuijn uit Nieuw-Vossemeer. Dat is haar eerste man.
