Cornelis Gerardus Bikkers werd op 25 januari 1925 in Goirle geboren als zoon van Hermanus Bikkers en Petronellas Antonia (Pietje) Eijsermans. Hij was tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog lid van de Nederlandse Arbeids Dienst (NAD) Hij was oorlogsslachtoffer. Hij overleed tussen 15 maart en 3 mei 1945 hetzij in concentratiekamp Neuengamme (Duitsland) hezij op transport naar Lubeck, of op een der schepen in de Lubecker bocht. De vraag rijst "Wat was de NAD eigenlijk? en wiesloten zich daar bij aan?"
Aan de oorlogsgids van het Nationaal Archief ontlenen wij de volgende toelichting:

Rijkscommissaris A. Seyss-Inquart en Generalkommissar F. Schmidt waren verantwoordelijk voor de invoering van de invoering van de Nederlandse Arbeidsdienst (NAD).
Zij wilden deze op nationaal-socialistische beginselen geschoeide Arbeidsdienst geleidelijk invoeren. Plotselinge confrontatie met de verplichte Arbeidsdienst zou immers bij de Nederlandse bevolking weerstand kunnen oproepen. \
Seyss-Inquart en Schmidt grepen de demobilisatie van het Nederlandse leger aan om een overgangsfase, in de vorm van de opbouwdienst te creëren.
Doel was om de rest van de Nederlandse krijgsmacht naar de burgermaatschappij over te brengen om de werkeloze soldaat te helpen zijn krachten aan de wederopbouw van zijn land te wijden.
De bezetter had echter van het begin af aan de intentie om de Opbouwdienst in een later stadium tot Arbeidsdienst te transformeren.

Op 15 juli 1940 trad de Opbouwdienst in werking.

Gesteld kan worden dat de Opbouwdienst, zowel door de ideologische instelling van het kader als van de grote meerderheid van de leden en ondanks de eigenlijke intentie van de Duitse oprichters, een strikt Nederlandse instelling bleef.
De voormalige militairen waren Nederlandse mannen, die de Opbouwdienst accepteerden als een sociaal vangnet, maar verderr anti-Duits dachten en bleven denken.
De klachten over landerigheid en het gebrek aandiscipline waren legio.

Al met al was de Arbeidsdienst voor veel afzwaaiende verplichte arbeidsmannen niet louter een slechte ervaring geweest. De Arbeidsdienst had zelf twee punten van aantrekkelijkheid:
hij bood de gelegenheid om aan de Arbeidsinzet in Duitsland te ontkomen en verder was, bij de voordurende verslechtering van de levensmiddelendistributie, het goede eten in de arbeidskampen van grote betekenis.
