De panden waren eigendom van Joannes Maria Franciscus Hamers, geboren te Tilburg op 29 januari 1865. Hij trouwde te Maastricht op 10 januari 1902 met Maria A.E. Thomassen. Hamers was goud- en zilversmid en begon zijn zaak in 1887. In 1889 vestigde hij zich als juwelier aan de Nieuwlandstraat, waar hij reclame maakte voor 'een buitengewone keuze nouveauté's op het gebied van byouteries'. Als juwelier kreeg hij in 1904 het predikaat hofleverancier. Later zou hij zich, onder invloed van P.J.H. Cuypers, uitsluitend toeleggen op de edelsmeedskunst in de neogotische richting. De firma is dan bekend als 'Joh. Hamers magazijnen voor kerkelijke kunst'. In 1913 wordt het bedrijf verplaatst naar de Heuvelstraat en is daar bekend als 'firma Hamers Kerkwerken'. Een van de meesterwerken van Joh. Hamers was een gouden zonnemonstrans voor de H. Landstichting. Voor een Tilburgs klooster vervaardigde hij in 1895 een kerk 'in zuivere Gotische stijl', in 1937 een ciborie voor pastoor Nabuurs van de parochie Broekhoven II, in 1939 een metalen calvariegroep voor het hoofdaltaar in de kloosterkapel van de ursulinen. Door zijn werk voor kloosters en kerken kreeg hij in 1901 van paus Leo XIII het zilveren kruis 'Bene Merenti'. In 1895 werd Hamers medeoprichter en bestuurslid van de handelsvereniging 'Tilburg'. Zijn enige openbare funktie, want hij stond bekend als een zeer teruggetrokken man, die leefde voor de kunst. Met een verwijzing naar zijn naam was zijn lijfspreuk 'frappez toujours'. Door zijn grote bescheidenheid liet hij het vijftigjarig bestaan van zijn bedrijf in 1937 geheel onopgemerkt voorbij gaan. Joh. Hamers overleed na een kortstondige ziekte te Tilburg in het ziekenhuis op 27 januari 1941. De zaak werd voorgezet door zijn zoon Adriaan. Zijn dochter trouwde de Goirlese textielfabrikant Eli Peijnenborg. Een broer van Joh. Hamers was Adriaan Hamers, priester en componist van volksliederen. Een van zijn trouwste werknemers was Jacques Kramer. Hij was in 1934 40 jaar in dienst van de firma Hamers. De werkplaats van Hamers aan de Nieuwlandstraat was gevestigd aan de overkant van de straat op nummer M. 1203.
