Stamvader van de Rooms-Katholieke tak Nassau-Siegen. Hij studeerde te Genève in 1600, streed 1604
in Hongarije tegen de Turken, werd 1609 ritmeester in Staatse dienst, streed 1610 onder prins
Maurits bij Gulik, werd 1612 kamerheer van keizer Matthias, ging 1613 over tot het katholicisme,
diende 1614 Savoye en verwierf het markiezaat van Monte Caballo. Tenslotte trad hij in Spaanse
dienst: in 1623 bevorderd tot kolonel, 1627 ridder in de Orde van het Gulden Vlies, 1 juli 1629
werd hij keizerlijk veldmaarschalk. Hij kocht 28 maart 1629 de baronie van Renaix (= Ronse), in
Vlaanderen. In 1631 leed hij een zware nederlaag op het Slaak bij Tholen
