Zijn zeer religieuze aard en zijn grote kennis van de Heilige Schrift waren oorzaak, dat hij later vaak op trad als leider bij godsdienstige gezelschappen. Bij deze gezelschappen stond hij bijzonder hoog aangeschreven. Zijn begrafenis vond onder grote belangstelling plaats.
