Het kind krijgt de naam Geert Hut. In 1895 trouwt zijn moeder met Arie Dijst. Bij het huwelijk van zijn ouders is Geert Hut niet erkend als de zoon van Arie Dijst. Bij akte van 9 juli 1897 erkent Geertje Hut het kind Geert Hut als het hare. In 1897 heeft Arie Dijst een verzoekschrift gestuurd naar H.M. de Koningin der Nederlanden met het verzoek tot naamsverandering van zijn pupil Geert Hut in Jan Dijst. Bij Koninklijk Besluit van 17 december 1898 is toestemming verleend, dat de geslachtsnaam van Geert Hut wordt gewijzigd in Dijst. Kennelijk is vergeten de voornaam aan te passen, want bij vonnis van het Arrondissementsrechtbank te Amsterdam, 24-04-1899, is aan Geert Dijst vergunning verleend tot het wijzigen van de voornaam naar Jan in plaats van “Geert”. Kennelijk heeft Arie Dijst het kind geadopteerd.

Jan staat ingeschreven in het Militieregister. Hij heeft een verzoek ingediend om vrijgesteld te worden in verband met kostwinnerschap. Gedeputeerde Staten hebben op 08-05-1912 dit verzoek afgewezen. Jan is groot 1.70 meter. Zijn voorkeur gaat uit naar de Zeemilitie of de Veldartillerie. Op 04-10-1913 wordt hij ingedeeld bij het 2e Veldartillerie in Leiden. Op 31-07-1921 wordt hij ontslagen wegens dienstbeëindiging.
