Notes about Anna Theodora Maurisse

Perhaps keeping a deathbed promise to her husband HENDRIK, ANNA THEODORA Mac Gillavry-Maurisse sent all but one of her children to Zwolle for the Mennonite (Doopsgezinde) Confession of Faith and Baptism, even though his death of cholera in 1835 left her pregnant in dire financial straits. Although she was from a Huguenot family herself, she must have agreed that the institutionalized Doopsgezinde network and support system was worth the investment and managed to scrape up the money. First came the eldest son Willem Joan Julius in 1838 at age 18, then in 1841 HENRI PThE (20), Robert JW (17), Louise AE (15) and Elisabeth AE (14) together and together they left two months later back to the East Indies with their attestations. The two youngest children, Alexander Donald and Theodorus Hendrik would have been too young at age 12 and age 6 to make the voyage or to make a credible freely given Confession of Faith. Alexander Donald chose a military career, which would not have been compatible with Doopsgezinde tenets, but her youngest, Theodorus Hendrik, made his Confession of Faith and was baptized in Zwolle at age 17 in 1852.se AE and Elisabeth AE is Mac Gillavry with 'Mac' and 'Gillavry' separated. For Willem JJ the last name is Macgillavry, so the decision to officially and permanently separate 'Mac' and 'Gillavry' must have been made between 1838 and 1841. It looks like they insisted on the new “correct” spelling. (By Ingrid Frank)
