Johannes Schonis is de tweede schoenmaker in de Zeeuwse familie. Ongetwijfeld zal hij, net als zijn broer, het vak bij de familie De Roos hebben geleerd. Uit de gegevens uit de burgerlijke stand van Middelburg blijkt dat de familie Schonis eerst een tijdje in Vlissingen heeft gewoond (wellicht zelfs even in België tot kort voor het einde van de Eerste Wereldoorlog). Pas op 8 maart 1929 keren ze terug naar Middelburg en gaan ze wonen in het huis aan de Korte Noordstraat 21 in Middelburg.
