Herman kwam uit een gezin van 6 kinderen, van wie hij de oudste was. Hij is door zijn vader erkend en bij diens huwelijk op 14-09-1898 gewettigd. Hij was typograaf en later hofmeester in het gouverneurspaleis.
Bij de Volkstelling 1921 bestond het huishouden van Herman en Nelly aan de Klipsteenenstraat 12boven uit 11 personen. De ouders en drie kinderen, Mampie en Henny Vliese, Antje Nelly Hilversum geboren 01-01-1843 en Antoinette Louise Hilversum geboren 01-05-1912. En dan waren er nog twee "bestedelingen" in huis: Henriette Regina Elisabeth Wellis geb. 19-10-1910 en Irene Esseline van der Meer geb. 18-12-1916. Bestedelingen vielen onder een vorm van armenzorg. Zij werden meestal door de kerk uitbesteed aan een goede familie.
